It is a time of freedom and fear, of Gaia and of borders, of many paths and the widening of
a universal toll road, emptying country and swelling cities, of the public bought into
privacy and the privacy of the public sold into invisible data banks and knowing
algorithms. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the
planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.
These are the times when maps fade and direction is lost. Forwards is backwards now, so we glance sideways at the strange lands through which we are all passing, knowing for certain only that our destination has disappeared. We are unready to meet these times, but we proceed nonetheless, adapting as we wander, reshaping the Earth with every tread. Behind us we have left the old times, the standard times, the high times. Welcome to the irregular times. The International Herald Tribune reports that anti-Bush protesters visiting New York City to protest at the Republican National Convention can get discounts at restaurants like Applebee's -- so long as they wear a powder-blue Bloomberg-designed button identifying themselves as "Peaceful Political Activists." Well, of course we're going to be peaceful political activists, and of course we don't have to be identified with a government-issued badge in order to exercise our first-amendment rights to assembly and speech. We'll be assembling for a number of reasons in a number of ways. If you're looking for a non-government-issue protest button to wear, we'd love to be of help. As a way of drowning out the field of powder blue, we're declaring a Republican National Convention special: From now through the end of the month of August, you can get yourself a pack of 50 of either of the two buttons below for just $50. Order 'em now and you can still get 'em in time for the convention protests. Just click on the image of the button you want, and you're off!
